Overview
Melanotan II is a synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is studied primarily for its non-UV-mediated stimulation of melanin production (tanning) and for its pronounced effects on sexual function via central melanocortin pathways.
Mechanism of action
MT-2 binds non-selectively to melanocortin receptors MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. MC1R activation stimulates eumelanin production in melanocytes. MC4R activation in the CNS drives libido and erectile response. MC3R/4R also suppress appetite.
Reported benefits
- Accelerated tanning with reduced UV exposure
- Increased libido and sexual response
- Mild appetite suppression
- More uniform pigmentation
Research dosing
Research protocols: 250–500 mcg daily until desired pigmentation, then 2–3x weekly maintenance. Pre-titration with very low doses (100 mcg) is standard to assess tolerance.
Considerations
Nausea and facial flushing are common on first dose and resolve with titration. Existing moles may darken — baseline skin checks are recommended in research settings.
